What is a GC test?

Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection and thus this test is used to see the presence of gonorrhoea in the body. It is a sexually transmitted infection which can be caused by both men and women and be transmitted to the foetus from an infected female during pregnancy.

What is this test used for?

This test is used for the testing of gonorrhoea infection. Chlamydia is tested along with it and sometimes these two sexually transmitted infections occur together.

What are the other names used for the test?

Other names include:

  • GC test
  • Gonorrhea nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT)
  • Gonorrhea DNA probe test
What are the risk factors that indicate this test?

The following are the risk factors :

  • Previous gonorrhoea infection
  • Multiple sex partners
  • Sex partner having an STD
  • Condoms not being used correctly
  • Presence of other STDs
What is this test used for?

Symptoms in men of this infection include:

  • Swelling in scrotum
  • Pain while urinating
  • Tender testicles
  • Yellow, green or white discharge from the penis

Symptoms in women of this infection include:

  • Pain during intercourse
  • Pain while urinating
  • Vaginal discharges
  • Bleeding in between periods
  • Abdominal pain
How is this test done?

This test is done as follows:

  • In women: a urine test as well as a sample from the cervix is taken.
  • In men: sample from suspected areas like mouth or rectum and urine test
How is the result of the test interpreted?

It is interpreted in the following two ways as positive or negative:

  • Positive /abnormal: it means gonorrhoea infection is present
  • Negative/ Normal: it means that gonorrhoea is not present but still if the symptoms are present then the cause should be determined by an additional test.
What are the preparations to be done before the test?

A woman who is undergoing the test needs to avoid the usage of vaginal creams and douches 24 hrs before the test. But if a urine test is to be done then urine should not be voided for 1-2 hrs before the test for both men and women.

What are the other tests done along with gonorrhoea?

Other tests done along with this are HIV, Chlamydia and syphilis
