What is Lassa Fever?

It is an acute viral hemorrhagic illness caused by Lassa virus.
It is a member of the arenavirus family of viruses.

What is the mode of transmission?

There are two ways for the virus to get transmitted:-
• It happens when the humans get an exposure to urine or feces of infected Mastomys rats. 
• Lassa virus may also be spread between humans through direct contact with bodily secretions and blood of a person infected with Lassa fever.
What is the incubation period?
The incubation period is 6 to 21 days.

What are the signs and symptoms of Lassa fever?

The signs and symptoms of Lassa fever are as follows: –
• Fever,
• general weakness,
• malaise
• headache,
• sore throat,
• muscle pain,
• chest pain, 
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• diarrhoea,
• cough,
• abdominal pain 

What are the investigations of Lassa fever?

The laboratory investigations are as follows: –
• Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for Lassa virus antigen and for virus IgM are 88% sensitive and 90% specific for acute infection.

What treatment is advised for Lassa fever?

The treatment includes an antiviral drug ribavirin seems to be an effective treatment if administered early during clinical illness.
However, there is no prophylactic medication or any effective vaccine that is seen.

What are the complications of Lassa fever?

The complications are as follows: –
– The complication which is mostly observed of Lassa fever is deafness.
– Various degrees of deafness occur in few cases the hearing loss is permanent.
