1) What is Neonatal Jaundice?

It is a condition in which the bilirubin level in the blood is high. In this, there is yellow discoloration of the white part of the eyes and the skin. It is also known as the Jaundice of the newborn, Bili Lights Jaundice or neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia.

2)What causes jaundice in newborn babies?

It is a common condition in the newborn babies, particularly in babies born before 38 weeks of gestation (preterm babies) and some breastfed babies.

Infant jaundice usually occurs because a baby’s liver is not mature enough to get rid of bilirubin in the bloodstream.

Infection in baby’s blood like sepsis.

An incompatibility between the maternal blood and the baby’s blood.

Liver complaints.

Hypoxia is known as a low oxygen level.

High level of red blood cells in premature babies or in case of twins babies.

Mother with gestational diabetes causes the baby to develop neonatal jaundice.

3)What are other risk factors?

Difficulty in nursing (breastfeeding) or not getting enough nutrition.

Premature birth of the baby.

Bruising during birth, in this case, there is an excess breakdown of red blood cell which results in the high level of bilirubin.

3)What is the normal level of bilirubin in newborns?

The normal level of bilirubin in infants is 0.3–1.0 mg/dL. In case, of first 24 hours of birth the value of bilirubin may vary that is 5 mg/dL, but in some cases, newborns have some kind of jaundice and due to this there is an increased level of bilirubin that rises above 5 mg/dL within the first few days after birth.

4)What is a good bilirubin level for a newborn?

The normal bilirubin level in newborns is under 5.2 mg/dl within the first 24 hours of birth.

5)What are the sign and symptoms of neonatal jaundice?

Signs-

– The most common sign is yellowing of the skin and sclera (the whites of the eyes).

– The spreading of the yellowness of the skin mainly starts at the head first after that it spreads to the chest, stomach, arms, and the legs.

Symptoms of neonatal jaundice are:

– Poor feeding of the baby.

– Pale yellow stool, mainly the breastfed babies should have a greenish blackish stool, while those of bottle-fed babies should be a greenish yellow color stool.

– Dark urine may present, mainly the urine of the newborns baby is colorless.

– The weak appearance of the baby.

– Sometimes fever may present.

– Drowsiness

6)How many types of neonatal jaundice?

There are mainly two types of neonatal jaundice.

Physiological Neonatal Jaundice

– It is the normal type of neonatal jaundice, it mostly appears at day 2 to 5 and lasts about 10 to 12 days.

– The best treatment for physiologic jaundice is frequent and effective breastfeeding. At least10-12 or more times per day.

PathologicalNeonatal jaundice

It is the most serious type of jaundice.

– It occurs within 24 to 48 hours after birth, in this, the bilirubin level is high more than 5 mg/dL or may raise.

-The main cause of pathological neonatal jaundice is:

Any blood incompatibility.

Liver disease.

Breastfeeding can continue during treatment.

7)How long do you leave a baby in the sun for jaundice?

Fifteen minutes exposure of sunlight is sufficient to the baby.

8)How long does it take for jaundice to go away in infants?

The physiological type of neonatal jaundice usually appears on a baby’s second or third day of life and disappears on its own within 2 to 3 weeks of after birth, but in case of premature babies it peaks at 5 to 7 days and may take up to two months to go away.

9)How does jaundice affect a newborn baby?

In real cases, if the jaundice is left untreated and bilirubin levels are very high and reach 25mg, there is the possibility of :

– Cerebral palsy

– Brain damage

– Deafness

10)Can babies die from jaundice?

1.No, mostly it is a rare condition when a baby died from jaundice and it depends upon the severity of the case. However, if treatment of jaundice is necessary, infants tend to respond to non-invasive therapy.

2. In such cases, untreated infant jaundice may lead to brain damage and even death of the baby.

11)How long does it take to clear jaundice?

Neonatal jaundice mainly the physiological type of jaundice need phototherapy lights for around 48 hours and often longer.

Physiological jaundice normally clears by 20 to 25 days of baby life, but in the case of pathological jaundice, it takes time to cure.

12)How to manage the case of Neonatal Jaundice?

Phototherapy ( make sure baby wears a diaper and protective eye patches)

• Breastfeeding eight to twelve feedings a day is a must for the first few days of life.

• Keep feeding after

• Keep baby well hydrated and nourished.

• Sunlight for 10 minutes helps to breakdown indirect bilirubin.

13)What is the prognosis of Neonatal Jaundice?

The physiological newborn jaundice is not harmful, babies usually get better without treatment within 1 to 2 weeks.

But in the case of pathological neonatal jaundice, there is a very high level of bilirubin that can damage the brain and leads to Kernicterus.

14)Can homeopathic medicines help in case of Neonatal Jaundice?

Yes, homeopathic medicines can help in case of neonatal jaundice. Some homeopathic medicines are as follows:

Chelidonium Majus

Mercurius Solubilis

Phosphorus

China
