What is hiccup? or What are Hiccups?

Hiccups are defined as involuntary contractions of the diaphragm and this involuntary contraction repeats itself several times per minute or it is defined as a spasmodic inspiration that gets suddenly arrested by an involuntary closure of the glottis or is defined as the involuntary movement of the muscles at the base of the lungs, this spasm of the muscles is followed by quick closing of the vocal cords, which lead to a particular sound formation.
Hiccups are also named synchronous diaphragmatic flutter or singultus.
It can occur individually or can occur in bouts. The rhythm of every successive hiccup is constant.

Hiccups more commonly occur in?

The incidence of hiccups is the same in both males and females but protracted hiccups and intractable hiccups types are more common in males.
It can occur in any age group, but the frequency of occurrence of hiccups decreases with advancing age.
Hiccups occur more in preterm infants.
Intractable hiccups are more common in adults.

What are the signs and symptoms of hiccups?
  1. There are single or multiple numbers of breathing diaphragm spasms, of variable spacing and duration
  2. There occurs a short time or brief, involuntary, shoulder, abdomen, throat, or full-body tremor
  3. Hiccups are heard as a ‘hupp’ sound or if it is controlled, a quick inhaling gasp, sigh or sniff is there
  4. The patient complains of brief, painful, frequent or occasional, disruption in normal breath along with momentary pain
What are the causes of hiccups?
  • Eating too fast
  • Taking carbonated beverages, alcohol, dry bread, and some spicy foods
  • Laughing can also lead to hiccups
  • After taking hot foods or liquids
  • From harmful fumes
  • Stroke or tumor affecting the brain
  • Type of diseases or disorders leading to the irritation of nerves that control the diaphragm such as pleurisy and pneumonia
  • Abdominal surgery after
  • Acute alcohol ingestion or alcoholism can lead to the development of hiccups.
  • Weight loss, emotional distress, and insomnia can lead to complication of prolonged episodes of hiccups
  • Arrhythmia-induced syncope also causes hiccups

Psychogenic causes leading to hiccups are as follows:

  • Shock
  • Hysteria
