What is irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder.
It is characterized by persistent and recurring abdominal pain, bloating and altered bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation or alternate diarrhea and constipation).
