Tanapox virus was first seen in people in the flood plain of the tana river in Kenya during 2 epidemics in the year 1957 and 1962.
The people affected have acute febrile illness with localized skin lesions.

• Skin lesions: – Initially it is a small nodule and progresses to popular 15 mm diameter by 2nd week of infection and finally ulcerates by 3rd week which heals in 5-6 week leaving a scar.
• The lesions were usually seen in upper arm, face, neck and trunk. In rare cases lesions were seen in lower limb and head.

There is no definite treatment for Tanapox, however symptomatic treatment can be given of the following: • Anti-pyretic for fever and body ache
– Broad spectrum antibiotics for the lesions to avoid further complication or secondary infections.
– Antiseptic dressing for localized infection.
