What is Rett’s Syndrome and describe its stages?

Rett syndrome is a neurodevelopment disorder (Pervasive Developmental Disorder ) that leads to developmental problems in the areas of expressive language and hand gestures.

Children who are affected with this syndrome usually exhibit autistic-like behaviors in the early stage

This syndrome is described in following stages:-

Stage I (early onset):-

Age Group:- 6 and 18 months.

Signs and symptoms:- less eye contact ,reduced interest in toys and Delayed motor skills.

Duration:- This stage last for few months or maybe a year.

Stage II (rapid destructive stage):-

Age Group:-1 and 4 years.

Signs and symptoms:-Repetitive hand movements, breathing irregularities, Loss of social interaction and lack of communication.

Duration:– This stage may last for few weeks or months.

Stage III (pseudo-stationary stage):-

Age group:-2-10 years.

Signs and symptoms:-Motor problems, seizures.

Duration:-This stage usually last for years.

Stage IV (late motor deterioration stage):

Age Group:- Not Specific.

Signs and symptoms:- Curvature of the spine (scoliosis) ,weakness of muscle, rigidity and spasticity are also observed, increased muscle tome affects posture as well.

Duration:-This stage lasts for years or decades.

Occurrence:- This condition is rare as it affects about 1 out of 10,000 children.

Who are mostly affected by Rett’s Syndrome?

The children of all races can be equally affected. Male child usually dies in utero, usually female child is affected as this is X chromosome linked genetic defect.

Describe the signs and symptoms for Rett’s Syndrome?

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a result of Genetic mutation of the gene MECP2 which is located on the X chromosome.

The levels of nor epinephrine are on the lower side in the brain .

• Dyspnoea worsened due to stress.

• Possibility of short stature

• Drooling of saliva

• Flopping of upper and lower limbs.

• Unsteady gait and shaky hands.

• Seizures

• Avoiding eye contact

• Loss of normal sleep patterns

• Loss of social interaction.

• Poor blood circulation that can lead to cold and bluish arms and legs.
