What is Influenza?

Influenza commonly known as flu is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by a virus. The influenza virus infects the respiratory tract of animals, birds, and humans. The infection results in cough, fever, headache, and malaise, some may present with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, sore throat and diarrhea.

What are the causes of influenza?

Influenza is caused by the influenza virus that is divided into three types: A, B, and C.
Type A and B cause epidemics of respiratory illness in almost every winter.
Type C causes mild respiratory symptoms or no symptoms. Influenza virus spreads easily from person to person.

When does influenza season begin and end?

Influenza season begins in October and extends to May of the following year.

What is the incubation period for influenza?

The incubation period of influenza is one to four days.

How long is influenza contagious, and how long does it last?

It is contagious for about 24-48 hours before symptoms appear. In normal healthy adults, it is contagious for another five to seven days and in children for about seven to 10 days.
In adults, symptoms usually last for about five to seven days, but in children, the symptoms may last longer for about seven to 10 days.

It is highly contagious and spreads by:
