What is a FEV1

FEV stands for forced expiratory volume, which means the air exhales in 1 second.

What is the FEV1 lung function test?

It calculates the amount of air that a person exhales from their lungs in 1 second.

This test helps measure the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma. It is also known as a pulmonary function test.

What are the normal ranges for FEV1?
  1. 80% or greater – normal
  2. 70% – 79% – mildly abnormal
  3. 60% – 69% – moderately abnormal
  4. 50% – 59% – moderately to severely abnormal
  5. 35% – 49% – severely abnormal
  6. Less than 35% – very severely abnormal
Why is it used for?

This test is used when you have signs of impaired lung function. Many pulmonary diseases affect the lungs which slows down the breathing rate which you exhale. FEV1 is a useful test for differentiating between the various types of lung disease. It is one of the pulmonary function tests done to evaluate lung functions.

Why do I need to perform this test?

The indications for an FEV1 test include :

  • If you have symptoms of respiratory such as shortness of breath or wheezing.
  • A low oxygen level (rapid breathing) may be an indication of FEV1.
  • To help in diagnosing the pulmonary condition, such as pulmonary sarcoidosis or COPD.
