What is coomb’s test?

This test is used to detect presence of antibody against RBC or to evaluate destruction of RBC.

It is of two type:

Indirect and direct coomb’s test

Indirect coomb’s test means it measures the liquid part of blood (plasma).It is also known as indirect antiglobulin test(IAT).

Direct coomb’s test means it measures the red blood cell present in the blood.It is also known as direct antiglobulin test(DAT).

Why do I need this test?

This test is needed to detect following conditions:

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia

Cold autoimmune hemolytic anemia

Hemolytic disease of fetus

HUS – Hemolytic uremic syndrome

Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria

Transfusion reaction due to blood group antibody-antigen mismatch

Why is coombs test done?

Coomb’s test is used to determine the cause of hemolytic anemia(it is a condition in which red blood cells (RBCs) are destroyed which is due to antibodies attached to red blood cell( RBCs)

What does a positive coomb’s test mean?

Coombs test positive means person have antibodies that act against red blood cells. It may be due to: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, Chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Blood disease of newborns called erythroblastosis fetalis (also called hemolytic disease of the newborn)in that case baby need a transfusion with compatible blood to prevent anemia.

What happen if test is negative?

Coomb’s test negative means fetus is not in danger of problems relating to Rh incompatibility.

Any preparation for this test?

No preparation is needed

How it is measured?

Measurement is made using a blood sample from a vein. The sample is then taken to a laboratory and analyzed.
